Neundorfer, Inc. began working to improve electrostatic precipitator performance in North America back in 1973, and continues today with a highly productive, innovative, service-driven team (click here to learn more about Our People). Our current success at Neundorfer is a result of all that we've learned over the last 30+ years as well as the disciplines we have applied. Neundorfer has survived and adapted to the volatility and uncertainty that characterizes our market. In the early 1970's, with the passage of the Federal Clean Air Act, utilities and other "heavy" industries reviewed the performance of their particulate collection equipment. These industries called upon the few precipitator original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) to improve the exisiting precipitators and install new units. As a result of this increased demand for new precipitators, many more large companies entered the market in the early 1970's, increasing competition as well as pricing and profitability pressures. The focus of the OEMs was on new, large installations - smaller service and upgrade activities were seen as a distraction. This created an opportunity for companies with strengths in design innovation, technical service and quality execution of smaller upgrade projects. In 1973, Neundorfer, Inc. became one of a few non-OEM precipitator companies focused on upgrading rapping systems and designing other mechanical improvements. Neundorfer soon developed digital controls for rappers and then T/R set controls a bit later on. Throughout the 1970's, Neundorfer built credibility with customers and created improved equipment designs. Customers were soon convinced that Neundorfer, a company that did not build their precipitator, nonetheless could do a better job improving it than the OEMs. Neundorfer had established a reputation for excellent service and competitive prices - our sales and profits grew as a result. Neundorfer sales continued to grow throughout the 1980's, but our competition grew faster. With a declining market for new precipitators, OEMs looked to the improvement market to survive. OEMs also reduced staff, many of whom entered the precipitator consulting and improvement business. The result was not only increased competition, but the lack of experience among many start-ups reduced project quality and created volatile pricing. Neundorfer also made some erroneous and costly assumptions in the 1980's. With the belief that Neundorfer could and should diversify into areas beyond precipitators, we developed and patented two non-precipitator products based on in-house research. Neither product turned out to be a financial success. When faced with defending patent and partnership agreements, we believed that the legal system would provide relatively quick and objective resolutions. After 13 years to successfully defend one patent, we realized our assumptions were quite naive. Changes in the coal-fired utility industry added to the uncertainty and volatility of precipitator upgrade markets. The main Neundorfer customers throughout the 1970's and 1980's were coal-fired utilities. However, when coal-fired utilities faced the prospect of deregulation in the late 1980's and 1990's, they were forced to reduce staff and delay maintenance and capital projects. Neundorfer sales to coal-fired utilities dropped from about 85% of total sales in the mid-1980's to a low of 45%, rebounding somewhat in later years. Neundorfer attempts to diversify, our legal defense process, and increased competition added to our costs as the market continued to become more unpredictable. In the summer of 1993, we realized that changes were necessary for Neundorfer to continue our past success. We redirected our research and development to our core precipitator business, eliminated non-essential administrative duties, and reduced staff. We paid off corporate debt and more narrowly defined our business to providing service and equipment to improve precipitator performance. We decided to work with customers who value personal, comprehensive service and are willing to pay a reasonable price for innovative, honest, quality work. In 1993, we got back to the basics of product innovation and quick, responsive, quality customer service. Our new, narrowed focus soon resulted in exciting new rapper and control technologies as well as improved project execution and technical field services. Click here to read our Mission Statement. Since then, the Neundorfer business has steadily grown in sales and profits, and we remain debt-free. In 2003, we were able to acquire Wilhelm Environmental Technologies, enabling Neundorfer to provide a full range of flue gas conditioning products and services. Today, we are expanding our facilities to more than double our current physical size, allowing us to expand and better align our product and service teams with customer needs. Our continued growth is especially gratifying when the market remains as tumultuous as ever. Neundorfer is able to share profits and gains when times are good, and maintain staff through slower times, enabling us to retain experienced, innovative and dedicated staff-making positive things happen for our customers as a result.
